New Passport After Submitting Your DS-160? What to Do (2026)
Renewed, replaced or lost your passport after submitting the DS-160? What official guidance says about your DS-160, your appointment account and your interview.
New Passport After Submitting Your DS-160? What to Do
You submitted your DS-160, booked or planned your visa interview, and then your passport changed: you renewed it, replaced a lost or damaged one, or changed your name. Now the passport number on your DS-160 is not the one in your hand.
This guide sets out what official U.S. government guidance says about that, what it leaves open, and the steps that keep your DS-160, your appointment account and your passport consistent. If you would rather answer a few questions about your own case, the free Do I need a new DS-160? checker gives you a result with its official sources.
The short answer
- Bring the new passport to your interview. The official appointment service says an applicant who had to replace their passport before the appointment can attend and present the new passport.
- Your DS-160 now holds an old passport number. A submitted DS-160 cannot be edited, and it stays usable only while the information on it is still valid. No official page we found says a new passport always requires a new DS-160, but completing an updated one is the safer choice.
- If you complete a new DS-160, put its number on your appointment at least 3 business days before the interview. You can change it once without cancelling.
- The passport number in your appointment account can be changed once after you pay the visa fee.
What official guidance says
The U.S. visa appointment service FAQ covers a passport replaced before the appointment directly: the applicant can attend and present the new passport. If the new passport will not arrive in time, the appointment has to be cancelled or rescheduled, because nobody can apply for a visa without a valid passport. If the passport was stolen, bring a copy of the police report.
The same FAQ says submitted DS-160 forms do not expire and can be used many months later, “if the information entered on the form is still valid”. A passport number that is no longer yours is information that is no longer valid. That is why we treat an updated DS-160 as the safer path, while being clear that it is our reading, not an official rule.
You cannot change a submitted DS-160. The U.S. Embassy in Vietnam puts it plainly: “You cannot make changes to the DS-160 once you have submitted it. You will need to fill out a new DS-160.”
How to complete an updated DS-160
The State Department’s DS-160 FAQ explains how to start a new DS-160 from a submitted one: on the official site, choose “Retrieve Application”, enter your previous application ID, then “Create a New Application”. Your earlier answers fill in, and you update what changed. The State Department adds that you should check that everything carried over is current and accurate, so go through every page, not only the passport section.
When you submit it you get a new confirmation number. That number, not the old one, has to be on your appointment.
Your appointment account
Your visa appointment account is a separate record from your DS-160, and the official appointment service is strict about it:
- The DS-160 number on your appointment must match the confirmation page you bring. This applies at every U.S. embassy and consulate. Change it at least 3 business days before the interview. You keep your appointment, and you can make this change once.
- The passport number in your account can be changed once after you pay the visa fee.
- The name, date of birth, country of birth and passport country cannot be changed after you pay. If one of those changed with your new passport, contact your appointment service’s support centre.
If your interview is fewer than 3 business days away, you can no longer swap the DS-160 number without rescheduling. Contact the support centre before the interview to ask what to do. Our guide to changing the DS-160 number on your appointment walks through the steps.
Special cases
Lost or stolen passport. Report it, get the replacement, and bring a copy of the police report to your appointment. A valid U.S. visa in a lost passport also needs attention: the State Department’s lost and stolen visas page explains what to do.
Name change. After a legal name change you need a new passport first. Your DS-160 then needs your new name as well as the new passport number, and the name in your appointment account cannot be changed after paying, so contact the support centre about it.
A valid U.S. visa in your old passport. The appointment service FAQ says a visa stays valid until it expires, even if the passport it is in has expired. You can travel with both passports, as long as they are from the same country and type.
Check your own situation
Every case is a little different: whether you have an appointment, how close it is, and which embassy or consulate you are applying at all change the next step. The free Do I need a new DS-160? checker asks about those and shows the official guidance behind its answer.
If you do need an updated DS-160, DS160.io guides you through every question in your language and checks your answers before anything is filed. Filing is free.
