Found a Mistake on Your DS-160 After Submitting? What to Do

You submitted your DS-160 and then spotted something wrong: a typo in your employer’s address, the wrong travel dates, a previous visit you forgot. It is one of the most common worries applicants have, and the advice online often conflicts.

This guide sticks to what official U.S. government guidance says. For an answer to your own situation, with the sources behind it, try the free Do I need a new DS-160? checker.

A submitted DS-160 can’t be edited

Once you sign and submit a DS-160, its answers are fixed. The U.S. Embassy in Vietnam says it directly: “You cannot make changes to the DS-160 once you have submitted it. You will need to fill out a new DS-160.”

If you have not submitted yet, this does not apply: go back to your draft with your application ID and fix it. The official site keeps a draft for 30 days.

How to correct it: complete a new DS-160

You do not have to start from a blank form. The State Department’s DS-160 FAQ explains that on the official site you can choose “Retrieve Application”, enter your previous application ID and choose “Create a New Application”. Your earlier answers fill in. Correct the mistake, then check every page: the State Department asks you to make sure everything carried over is still current and accurate.

Submitting gives you a new confirmation number. What you do with it depends on where you are in the process.

If you haven’t booked an interview yet

Use the new confirmation number when you book. The DS-160 number in your appointment account has to match the DS-160 confirmation page you bring to the interview.

If you already have an appointment

Since May 2025, every U.S. embassy and consulate has required the DS-160 confirmation number you bring to match the one on your appointment. According to the U.S. visa appointment service FAQ:

  • Update the number at least 3 business days before your interview. You keep your appointment; you do not have to cancel.
  • You can change it once. After that, contact your appointment service’s support centre.
  • If you miss the 3-day window, you will have to reschedule and may have to pay the visa fee again.

Our step-by-step guide to changing the DS-160 number on your appointment shows where the setting is.

Some guides suggest simply bringing both confirmation pages to the interview. We found no official guidance that says so. What the official guidance does require is that the number on your appointment matches the confirmation page you bring.

If your interview is in the next 3 business days

You can still complete a corrected DS-160, and correcting a mistake is the safer path. But it is too late to put the new number on your appointment without rescheduling, and the appointment service in Mexico notes that a visa fee paid more than 365 days ago would have to be paid again. Contact your appointment service’s support centre before the interview to ask what to do.

Mistakes to ask the embassy about first

Some answers carry more weight than others. If the mistake is in your name, date of birth, visa category, a previous visa refusal, or a security and background question, a correction is usually still a new DS-160, but confirm the procedure with the embassy or consulate handling your application, or with a qualified immigration professional, before you change or cancel anything.

If your visa was refused because of errors

That is a different situation. When a visa is refused because the DS-160 had errors or was incomplete, the State Department’s FAQ says the embassy or consulate reopens your application, and you correct the same DS-160 with your application ID rather than starting a new one. Then follow the instructions the embassy or consulate gave you.

If only your appointment account is wrong

Sometimes the DS-160 is right and the mistake is in the appointment account, for example a mistyped passport number. Fix the account, not the DS-160: the passport number can be changed once after you pay the visa fee. The name, date of birth, country of birth and passport country cannot be changed after paying, so if one of those is wrong, contact the support centre.

Check your own situation

The free Do I need a new DS-160? checker asks what is wrong, where you are in the process and where you are interviewing, and shows the official guidance behind its answer.

When you complete the corrected DS-160, DS160.io checks your answers before anything is filed, so the next one is right the first time. Filing is free.
